Buying my first sewing machine

Buying my first sewing machine

As a sewing beginner, the first step of my sewing journey was to buy my first sewing machine. My budget wasn’t great along with that I didn’t know what type of machine to buy and what features I needed on a sewing machine. With thorough research, I found out that as a beginner all I needed was a sewing machine that has a straight stitch, reverse stitch, zigzag stitch and a buttonholer. Thank goodness my current machine the Empisal expression 889 was on special (currently, costs around R1799 Game retail store 2016/10/05) and it had all the basic features I needed to start sewing. The machine is easy to use with an easy to read manual which came in real handy.

My Empisal Expression 889

Empisal Expression 889 features:
  • ·        18 Stitch function
  • ·        Front load bobbin
  • ·        4 Step button hole
  • ·        Reverse stitch
  • ·        Zipper foot

However, I hate the front load bobbin as it's really a hassle to change the bobbin, which took me while to figure out how to change the bobbin.
But, if you are wondering what is a bobbin, basically a bobbin is a small coil of thread that holds the lower thread of the stitch. In my machine, the bobbin is placed in a bobbin case and loaded in front of the sewing machine.

But other than the front load bobbin my sewing machine has treated me well.

However, I am looking to upgrade my sewing machine to a mid-range computerised sewing machine. I am looking to get the Brother Innov-Is NV15P computerised sewing machine.

It has all the features I am looking for
right now :)

  1. HI there,

I have a Empisal Expression 889 Sewing Machine and for the life of me I do not know how to change the stitch selection to get the stitches marked with red. I understand the manual in turning the knb/stitch selector byt get the inner circle stitches is proving to be quite challenging for me.

Can you please assist. I will probably feel quite embarassed if it is a simple push or pull (which I've unsuccessfully tried).

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Ruqayyah,

Unfortunately, I have not used the red stitch selections yet. I have lost my sewing mojo at the moment :(. But i will surely try to figure it out and post it up for you. But if you figure it out before I do please share.

      Thank you :)

About Me

Hi there, my name is Busisiwe a Thirty-something budding sewing bee from South Africa, Johannesburg. I’ve always had an interest in sewing especially the idea of sewing my own clothes. I had always thought it would be difficult to learn how to sew so I stayed away from learning. Then I discovered Mimi G and I was so inspired to learn how to sew and I have never looked back. I’ve only been sewing for a few months now and decided to write a blog to document my journey. Hopefully, this will help other budding sewing Bees, if I can do it anyone can and it is so fulfilling.
